About the Winery

All grapes are estate grown on their 40+ acres, divided into small plots. Many of these plots are covered with large quartzite stones which help regulate temperatures, thus creating a very favorable environment for polyphenolic ripening of the grapes. The ungrafted vines, many of which are over 100 years old, are taken care of by the family in the same way their ancestors did, without pesticides or fertilizers. Organic matter is reused and the soil is plowed without the use of machinery. Total production levels for Lui & William’s handcrafted wines is under 5,000 cases annually.

Winemaking

Lui undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels. The temperature is maintained at 78 °F. After 10 months of maturation in oak, the wine is minimally filtered before bottling which helps to maintain all of the wine’s complex aromas.

Tasting Notes

An deep purple color with a crimson red rim, Lui Selection displays notes of cocoa, allspice, wood smoke, espresso, and blackberry fruit. On the palate flavors of dark chocolate and blackberry dominate. This full-bodied red has thick, structured tannins that are balanced by noticeable acidity, making this an excellent wine to be enjoyed with food.

Pairing Suggestions

Lui is perfect for grilled red meats. Enjoy with juicy Rib-Eye, rack of lamb, beef stew or even Spanish cheeses.
