Thelema sits at the top of the Helshoogte pass between Stellenbosch and Paarl. Gyles Webb bought the then-dilapidated fruit farm in 1983. Fruit orchards were pulled out and vines were planted. Since then, Thelema has risen to become one of the preeminent South African wineries. Respect for Thelema wines is rooted in adherence to estate tradition (the winery does not buy grapes from off the estate) and the wines' ripe and pure-fruited style.
